The song…Fear a bhata, …..also known as Mar Eala BanPosted: April 22, 2017 12:34 pm
I only just discovered that the song, Fear a bhata [the Boat man] is also known as Mar Eala ban [Like a white swan]. Jean Finlayson of Tong in Lewis composed the song in the late 18th century for Donald MacRae, her distant Boatman, in this song of longing and loving. In writing this song, she likens herself to the white swan….. And that will not wither until death do take me. Swans are famously known to have one mate for life. It is a true story, and Jean’s perseverance pays off, as Donald and her do, in real life, get married.
